Herzog & de Meuron’s 56 Leonard Street in Tribeca, New York

 Posted on 28/02/2017

Herzog & de Meuron’s design of the newest apartment block in Tribeca – 56 Leonard Street, is a composition of glass cuboids, some of which are offset from one another, like a tower of wooden Jenga blocks in the middle of a game. I spent a fair bit of time studying the building from various angles and during different times of the day. Instead of the usual high-rise typology of being a simple extruded volume 56 Leonard is composed of protruding geometries into the concrete floor slabs to create a spatially dynamic facade. An Anish Kapoor sculpture is expected to be installed at the arrival area.
